Book Club Friday: if i stay

Hey y'all,

Today's book review is timely since the movie adaptation for if i stay comes out TODAY! I grabbed this book on my nook this past week and it is such a fast read. I think it took me a total of two days to read this book and this is one of the busiest weeks of the year at work for me.
via
 Description:
On a day that started like any other, Mia had everything: a loving family, a gorgeous, admiring boyfriend, and a bright future full of music and full of choices. In an instant, almost all of that is taken from her. Caught between life and death, between a happy past and an unknowable future, Mia spends one critical day contemplating the only decision she has left. It is the most important decision she'll ever make.
Simultaneously tragic and hopeful, this is a romantic, riveting, and ultimately uplifting story about memory, music, living, dying, loving

Review:
So I had never heard of this book until I first saw the movie trailer and started to get misty eyed. The entire book takes place in a close to 24 hour time period with flashbacks to Mia's past. Told in her perspective the book begins with a day off of school due to a snow storm that left barely any snow on the roads. The family decides to make a day of it and heads to their family friend's house. On the way, the family is hurled into a car accident and Mia is in an out of body experience. She soon learns that she has the power to make the decision to stay and live or go on. I was surprised I did not cry as much in this book but there were a lot of emotional moments. I felt awful for Mia and it was interesting to see her relationship with Adam over the past. The majority of the book is seen through her observations of people at the hospital and then her past with her parents and relationships with Adam and Kim(her best friend). I thought it was a quick read and while not my favorite book ever it was a nice piece of YA fiction.

There is a sequel to the book called Where She Went that I might pick up soon since the ending of the book was pretty interesting. I will also update y'all on my thoughts about the movie since I am going with my roomie tomorrow.

Have you read if i stay? What are you currently reading?

2 months to go

Hey y'all,

If you didn't know, this year I decided to finally work on my goal of running a half marathon and forced myself to sign up for one therefore I would actually train. I actually got my baby sister involved as well so together we will run our first half in exactly 2 MONTHS! To say it has been a journey is an understatement. I also have moved, been in a wedding, and tried to get my life back to a normal schedule all with NC Summer heat.

via

Here are some tips I have gathered through the interwebs/talking to people that have run half and full marathons and some of my own experience:

-find a training plan and stick to it. I found a running plan and love that the week day runs are on nights that I do not have prior commitments. I run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturday and my long runs are on Sundays. You can search for lots of plans on Pinterest but remember to be realistic. I am not a big runner so the 16-week plan fit the best for me. I actually found my plan on Runkeeper! Your half marathon race might even have a suggestion on running plans.

-get a running buddy or someone to keep you accountable. Having my baby sister also run with me is a huge help. We actually are on the same training plan and although she is two hours away from me we text each other about our runs to hold one another accountable. Also, both being on Runkeeper we can see how each of us is doing! If you don't have a sibling find a running group or club. You can check out local sport stores to see if they have groups or even your local gym can be a resource of people. I know here in the Triangle Fleet Feet stores have groups as well as the Jeff Galloway running group. My roommate has also been a great motivator and buddy who will go on runs with me at night!

-don't beat yourself up. It is okay to take a few days off. While it is best to be consistent if you have to miss a run or only run two miles instead of the planned four, it is okay. I view my first half as an accomplishment to just finish so while there is a time I would like to be under the experience is my goal. Any and all effort is good in my book!

-cute workout clothes are important. Anyway to motivate you to get out the door is important. Why not have neon sneakers that make you smile? I might also be loving a Nike tank that is pink with hot pink polka dots? There are so many cute options for every price point so check out places like Target, T.J. Maxx, Old Navy, Dick's Sporting Goods, as well as Lululemon and Athleta.

-half the battle is getting to the gym. I personally pack my bag the night before and when I leave for work I toss it in my car. There are no excuses if I have all of my stuff considering I pass by my gym on my drive home to my apartment. If you have everything you need and it is a day to run you just have to do it. You never regret a workout.

-listen to your body. Rest days are so important in training and remembering to stretch and ice before and after runs is just as important as the run itself. I can have shin pain even with good shoes and inserts so the night before long runs I grab some bags of frozen peas and ice my shins while watching TV. It helps so much especially since my shin pain mainly comes from treadmill running. Also, incorporating some yoga helps to keep everything nice and loose for a great run. Here are some great moves I like to use:

via
Pinterest has lots of great moves or check out a yoga class on your rest days.

-it is okay to have a dance party on the treadmill. I love listening to music while I run and my spotify playlist is always gaining new songs so some times I am jamming along with crazy dance moves while I run and that is ok. I also might have been singing along to Tangled and the Little Mermaid this Sunday thanks to ABC Family I was motivated to keep pushing on so I could get to Poor Unfortunate Souls. I ran my longest distance ever 8 miles!

What are some of your tips for running? Any favorite songs to workout to?

#BuyMeLilly

Hey y'all,

For those of you who woke up early, or took a quick work break at 8am I want to know what you snagged at Lilly's After Party Sale. I am so pleased that the site worked out so well. Yes, there was a snag when they loaded the site but I looked around and took my time and still checked out twice all before 8:30am. I knew going in that I only wanted a few more Murfee scarves since the one I got last year is my go to scarf to brighten up a rainy day and I receive so many compliments on it. I was a little disappointed in so many scarves being over $40 but I ended up with these two items:

Lulu Murfee Scarf for $29
Jellies Be Jammin for $54
I love the Southern Charm pattern as well but I have a lot of pink and green going on in my scarf collection so I wanted to add ones with more colors.

What did you snag?

My blog is different

Hey y'all,

While I was taking my blog break I thought about how my blog is different. We can often get zapped into comparing our lives to others but I wanted to write about what makes my blog different and that it is ok! Here are a few things that when comparing my blog to some of the bigger names makes mine different.

...I don't post daily. Really, y'all, posting can be a struggle. I feel awkward taking fashion pictures so coming up with ideas is hard and sometimes living life is more important than taking 20 minutes to write a post.

...As much as I love Kate Spade I hate the beau bag. I love bows as much as the next girl and love all of my Kate Spade items but the beau bag is not something I would ever save up for or ask for as a gift. I mean the blush color and the all black are ok if someone wants to give me a $400 bag as a gift but I would much rather have something else.

...I do not have sponsors. Yep, this is a freetime deal. Would I love to receive free stuff, yes and I have had offers and I only present items I think are interesting to y'all and I love. I mean, the shirt I received from the Fraternity Collection is one of my favorites and I absolutely love it so of course I do not mind sharing about it but if you want me to talk about an item or store that I have never gone in I am going to tell you no. I only want to share things I actually believe in.

....I have only bought J.Crew and Lilly clothing items during major sales (New Year's Cheer, Warehouse Sales, Endless Summer). Really, I have never purchased anything from J.Crew at full price. I am excited for the Lilly sale that starts this morning though and I hope everyone acts like adults. Everything is discounted by a lot so be patient and know that high volume is expected.

...I have student loans (see point above). This means that my budget for clothing is small and I tend to splurge on large items on sale like my KSNY bags or my most recent splurge of Broadway season tickets with my co-workers. I would rather spend money on experiences than a few items of clothing.

...I hate Starbucks. Really I don't drink coffee at all so I don't tend to frequent coffee shops and if I do I get hot chocolate or tea. I also don't like pumpkin. So the fact that the Pumpkin Spice Latte returns next week is no big deal to me but this meme made me laugh.
via
...I don't use my instagram account that often (or really any social media). Yep. Bad blogger status. I love posting here and there but I know that I have a tendency to view social media posts through a jealous heart. In our day and age we post the perfect photos of our lives and hide all the mess. Well here are some messy photos. It is okay to show the mess and I have to remind myself of that daily. Not everything needs a filter.
what is my hair doing?
...I am a homebody. On any given Friday or Saturday night you will probably find me in my apartment cleaning, reading and relaxing. I do on occasion go out for dinner or drinks with friends but mainly, me + pjs=perfect Saturday night. This might have something to do with why my weekend updates are pretty sporadic or very similar.

I hope y'all enjoyed this post. I am in no way making fun of or talking down about other people's blogs. These are just facts about me that make this little blogspace mine. I have met some amazing people in the blog world and some of them have truly wonderful blogging businesses, but that is just not me. I hope you all had a lovely weekend!

What makes your blog unconventional or different?

Book Club Friday: The One

Hey y'all,

During my mini blogging break I was able to work on my to-read list so do not fret there will be a lot of Book Club Friday posts in the near future. If you have been around this little blog awhile then you know that I have loved the Selection series and you can read my reviews on The Selection (here) and The Elite (here). Now it is time to discuss the final book in the trilogy, The One.

via
 Description:
For the four girls who remain at the palace, the friendships they’ve formed, rivalries they’ve struggled with and dangers they’ve faced have bound them to each other for the rest of their lives.

Now, the time has come for one winner to be chosen.

America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown – or to Prince Maxon’s heart. But as the competition approaches its end and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realizes just how much she stands to lose – and how hard she’ll have to fight for the future she wants.

Thoughts:
ALL THE FEELS! This book has you running through a gambit of emotions. I was glad that we were able to go deeper into some of the other girl's lives since we have been given a bias through America's perspective. It was interesting to continue to learn more about the plots and the rebels. I wish that half the book I wasn't angry at everyone but I think if a book works you up there is a reason. I still think that the series could continue one for another book or two to discuss the reasons the nation got this way and the various programs put in place to change the world but I thought it was a good book and a page turner even if I wanted to throw Maxon and America into a room and make them talk to one another.

*REVISION: Thanks to Hannah for letting me know that Kiera Cass has announced not just the prequel but another novella and two more selection novels!*

Have you read the selection series? Thoughts?

Sally Sells Sea Shells by the Sea Shore

 Hey y'all,

While the school year is quickly approaching and we all think back to the time that August meant back to school shopping for new school supplies and the perfect first day of school outfit I thought I would share some of the basics on building a work wardrobe. I know that it has taken me a few years since graduating college to build my wardrobe and I thought I would share some tips and tricks along with some of my favorite items for all of those college graduates transitioning to the work world or those of you who love looking at adding some basic essential pieces to mix-in.

Your basic shell. I think shells are an essential to any wardrobe and luckily you can find them in any price point for those just starting out on a tight budget or those that have a bit of wiggle room. They are great tucked into a pencil skirt or toss on a cardigan or blazer with a black pant and you are ready for the boardroom.

Shells

Also, to add some shells to your wardrobe without braking the bank, LOFT's Friends and Family sale started today with 40% off everything using code SHAREIT. If you are on the email list you even get an additional 20% off coupon for LOFT Outlet stores.

And, don't forget that the Kate Spade Surprise Sale ends tonight! Shop the sales and work on building that work wardrobe!

Where are your favorite places to find work clothes?

Wishlist Wednesday

Hey y'all,

I cannot believe we are already halfway done with the week! Next week, classes start back on campus and I have no idea where the summer went. I hope you have all had a lovely start to your week and are excited for the weekend approaching. Since I am still working on getting back into the blogging world I thought I would just share a few items I am wishing for this week.

Wishlist Wednesday

boots/book/pajamas/pens/top/scarf

Hunter Rain Boots.  While the weather today has been beautiful, the past week or so has seen a lot of storms. I think some plain rain boots would work perfectly for traipsing on campus between the parking deck and my office.

if i stay. The trailer to this movie already has me crying so I think I need to grab the book quickly and read it before hitting the movies next week.

PJ pants. I love my Old Navy pj pants and I think this cute teal and pink seahorse print needs to be added to my collection. I love that the ON pj pants are long enough and I order a large so that they have a nice loose fit.

Sharpie pens. I love this time of year when you hit Target and there are school supplies everywhere. I love these pens to color code my agenda and I am keeping the colors consistent with my old planner but who doesn't love a new pack of pens?

Nike Running Top. I am still in the process of training for a half marathon in October. Luckily, I recruited my sister to join in on the running. Who doesn't like punny running tops?

Lilly Pulitzer Riley Infinity Scarf. With fall around the corner I am looking at grabbing a few more scarves. I love scarf weather and a bright and patterned scarf makes a statement with any outfit. Plus, why not join in on the tassel trend?

What is currently on your lust list? Have you read the book if i stay?

Whirlwind Wedding Weekend

Hey y'all,

I am still trying to get back on a normal schedule after my nice long, and busy weekend. This past Thursday I hopped on a plane (not to LAX) but to Illinois to be part of the celebration of my best friend from college jCm as she became Mrs. B! I was honored when J asked me to be her MOH and I was so happy to stand by her side on Saturday. I thought I should share a quick weekend update. *beware of picture overload

Thursday. The weekend started with an early wake up call to make a flight. Of course we started off the weekened with a little bridesmaid selfies before getting on the plane. And no we did not reenact any part of the film Bridesmaids. Luckily we all made it safely to IL with all our luggage and we were on our way to J's place.
We were greeted by this little guy. Meet Max. J&P rescued him and he is a little parrot since he loves being on people's shoulders.
After settling in we grabbed some lunch and then went off to get our nails done.
After nails it was time for some frozen custard and hanging out at the house before we went to see J & P's new place for their final walk through. Their new house is a great started home and I know they are so excited to move in. After the walk through us girls quickly got ready to go to dinner and drinks for J's bachelorette. It was a bit unconventional having dinner with the groom and all the family but we were able to take lots of photos! After a few drinks it was back to J's where we all crashed quickly since essentially we had been up since 4am with the time difference.

Friday. After sleeping in, it was off to errands and grabbing some Panera before heading to the lake to get ready for some photos. We were able to get some of J's bridals done before the rain began but then it became light enough we got some more shots done!
One of the previews from the photographers
After photos would have been the rehearsal but the minister was stuck in Atlanta due to weather. So we all got ready and headed into the city for dinner at the Spaghetti Factory which was so delicious and the bridal party might have all gotten balloon animals. Yes we are all college grads but who doesn't need a balloon giraffe? Also I think the rest of the table thought we were crazy since at one point we were all close to rolling on the floor laughing so hard. I love these girls and am blessed to call them not only friends but sisters.

Saturday. THE BIG DAY! It had arrived. After spending so much time in the city the night before we all got up and ready to go run a few errands before heading over to the salon. We all got ready with only one minor trip to the gas station nearby for food. I mean everyone needs caffeine and chocolate the morning of their wedding, right? After hair we headed over to the venue to get ready and hang out.
The time passed by so quickly and before you knew it it was time to get dressed and down to the ceremony!
THEY'RE MARRIED!
Then the bride and groom hopped on a boat and went up the lake to the clubhouse for the reception!
I was lucky my best guy friend came up from Atlanta to be my date and celebrate J so we all took some photos before heading to the reception.
The reception was a lot of fun and I only cried during the father/daughter dance and I made it through my speech without any major hiccups. We danced the night away and eventually stole the bride for some photos out on the deck (the guys had our cameras/phones so the quality is not the best)
Sunday. Waking up really early after 5 hours of sleep is not fun.  mKh, aAc and I all got ready to go and hopped in the car to the airport by 7am. We were lucky to be on the same flight again so it was time to get through baggage check and security (all while keeping our bouquets in tack) and off to wait for our flight. We had the sweetest stewards/stewardesses who all loved the bouquets and thankfully found a small overhead bin so they were safe in flight. GO SOUTHWEST! We made it back to NC by 12:30 and by 1pm I was home and it was time to work on some more unpacking of my new place. The rest of Sunday was pretty lazy. A trip to the grocery store. Target. and washing hairspray out of my hair concluded the night with me in bed by 9pm.

How was your weekend?

Happy Birthday, B!

Hey y'all,

Today is my lovely roommate's Birthday! I am so grateful that we met our first year at Carolina and we are still close today. Together we love going on runs, watching TV together, eating lots of Homestyle Popcorn, taking trips to Aldi, or simply talking up a storm. B is the first person who made me cooked spinach that I will eat, constantly encourages me with verses from the Bible, and encourages me as I am training for my half marathon. I am so glad that we have been able to be roommates over the past year and we decided we wanted to keep living together so I am sure you will see more of her on this little blog space but in the mean time the only thing I can say is:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Proud Advisor Moment

Hi All,

So I am still living in a land of boxes but my old apartment is cleaned and the keys will be turned in shortly. I just wanted to give a shout out to my sorority. This weekend was Phi Beta Chi's National Convention in Chicago. I never made it to convention as an active even when I was the VP so I really considered going this summer but the move and a wedding next weekend took that plan off the table. Our two delegates from Kappa chapter I know were really excited to attend especially with the voting of a new National Executive Council President on the books.

The convention was themed "Say Yes to the Crest" and I can't wait to here more from Kaleigh & Claire when they are back at school about how everything went but apart from our new NEC president being our first president from Texas I want to brag on my chapter for a minute.

via

This year as one of the faculty advisors has been tough and I am so proud of all of the accomplishments that the girls have made and all of the awards they received from the national office.

Kappa chapter received the Service Award for the 2013-2014 year. I am so proud of all the opportunities the women participate in to serve others. Whether it is through philanthropy events they host like Breakfast for Bethesda or Deb's Powderpuff Football Tournament, or going to make dinner at the Ronald McDonald House and crafting with kids at the Pediatric Playroom our sisters know that service to others is important to the sorority and shows God's love and grace.

via

Kappa's own Chaplain for the 2014 year received the Leadership award. I am so ecstatic for Sarah. She has served the chapter so well this past semester and all throughout the summer encouraging everyone and being a resource.

I am honored to know that I was selected as the winner of the Alumnae Award. I cannot believe that the chapter nominated me and I was selected over the countless number of women who help Phi Beta Chi sisters and help the sorority grow and flourish. I would not be who I am if I did not go through recruitment back in Fall 2008 and I am blessed to have all of these sisters, many whom I have never met supporting me.

Now for the final honor, Kappa Chapter received....

CHAPTER OF THE YEAR
via
Seriously, these girls work so hard and all I can say is that I am proud of all of their work and accomplishments. Yes, we have some growing pains and we are still learning about living in the house after a few years but these sisters are amazing and I am so lucky to have each and every one of them in my life not only as their advisor but as their sister and friend.

Happy Birthday, A!

Hey y'all,

Amidst my moving all of my things from a 2nd floor apartment to a 3rd floor apartment 20 mins apart I had to stop by and give a big shout-out to my bestie on her BIRTHDAY! This girl and I go way back to 10th grade together and between going to colleges 750+ miles apart and living in different states post-grad I am lucky to still have her in my life. A is the person I can go to to spill my guts and she is there with cool whip and a hug. I am so excited for A's journey this year into the world of MEDICAL SCHOOL! Yes, she is a smartie pants! So here is to her 24th year!
We never take photos together so here is one of her gallivanting between some berry vines
HAPPY BIRTHDAY A!

August Return

Hey y'all,

I'm back! Did you miss me? I definitely have had a whirlwind summer keeping busy at work, lots of drama with my housing situation, and getting to have lots of fun with friends. Now that the summer is winding down I hope I can keep a consistent routine with this little blog space. It has been great reading all of your posts this summer and I see a lot of people have had some amazing news so congrats to all of you graduates, newly engaged, now expecting, and now homeowners.

Now to welcome my self back to the blogging world I thought I would begin with a 5 on Friday!
via
1. Today is moving day! I am moving to a new apartment today with my roomie! I am so excited to be in a new place and to decorate it. I will of course have more photos later.
My current place getting filled with boxes.
2. J.Crew. I convinced myself to get the Downtown Field Jacket from J.Crew in Navy. With it being on Sale plus 40% off I got it for under 90 (including tax and shipping!) I think this will be the perfect investment for early fall and spring when it is cool but not parka/pea coat weather. If you have this coat let me know!

J.Crew The downtown field jacket

3. DPAC fun. This past Sunday, one of my friends/co-workers and I ventured to downtown Durham for lunch and an event at the Durham Performing Arts Center. eCs, cWn and I all got season tickets for the upcoming broadway shows and are excited to be patron-ing the arts.  eSc and I (cWn couldn't make it) we were able to test drive our seats and even got a backstage tour. The various artists who come to the DPAC sign the walls backstage and the musicals paint gorgeous murals.
4. Married at First Sight. This is a new show on FYI that I found when I was scrolling through Hulu. It is a social experiment where four specialists (a sexologist, spiritualist, psychologist and sociologist) created three "perfect" couples based on scientific matchmaking and interviews, etc. The couples never meet or even know their names until they walked down the aisle to be married. The experiment lasts 5 weeks and at the end the couples will make the decision to remain together or separate. It is so fascinating to watch and it is like a train wreck that you can't help but watch. I mean there are so many challenges to marriage but adding in that you know nothing about them is so strange of a concept to me. Also, if you want to watch another show on Hulu, I recommend Hotwives of Orlando that is a spoof on all the Housewives series from Bravo.
via
5. Kate Spade Agenda. So I have raved about my kate spade agenda here and I thought I would not need another agenda until Christmas. However, there was some terrible rain a few weeks ago that destroyed my planner so my parent's graciously purchased my Christmas present early and are bringing it to me tomorrow when they help with the move. I went with the bookshelf print for this bookworm.
via
Thanks for having me back!
What are your looking forward to this weekend?
